A native of Toronto, Canada, Alex Duncan is a young, up-and-coming trombonist who is comfortable in all musical genres. While his current focus is in jazz, Alex has extensive experience in many other genres such as classical, rock, hip-hop, ska, and funk. In addition to tenor trombone, Alex is equally proficient on bass trombone, euphonium, and tuba. He has performed with many ensembles including the Dave Young-Terry Promane Big Band, University of Toronto 10:00 and 11:00 Jazz Orchestras, Greater Toronto Philharmonic Orchestra, Toronto All-Star Big Band, GTA Swing Band, Hannaford Street Youth Band, and Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra. Alex also plays with groups such as My Son The Hurricane, a rock/funk/hip-hop group out of St. Catharine’s; The Ambassadors, a Toronto funk group; and Band Bajha Brass, a Bollywood-style brass band.
Alex is currently studying jazz trombone performance at the University of Toronto and will graduate in 2012. He has studied with William Carn, Terry Promane, Kelsley Grant, and Jeffrey Hall. Alex has performed in masterclasses for artists such as Joseph Alessi, principal trombonist of the New York Philharmonic/faculty at the Juilliard School; and Nitzan Haroz, principal trombonist of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
